The onset of strain localization in a copper single crystal, oriented for single slip, and cycled at a constant plastic strain amplitude corresponding to the low end of the plateau in the cyclic stress-strain curve, has been explored by inteferometry and analysis of hysteresis loops. Current methods
must have existed between the growing n-and the vanishing y-crystal. Many thanks are due to Mr. J.R.J. van Asperen de Boer who took part in the experiments. The authors are very much indebted to Professor Dr. W.G. Burgers, Dr. T.J. Tiedema and Dr. C.A. Verbraak for stimulating discussions and for h
