β¦ Synopsis
Taking the unweiehted vaiuee, ns given in Tnble 111, we have found the comelabon coefficient, r, to be 0:58 (P, for 11 pairs, = 0.06). There is thus a 1 in 16 probnbility thnt n grenter value of r might. nrise by chance in sampling uncorrelnted material. Farthermore, pens (" Harrison's Glory," dried), showed a 15-fold increase in vitamin-C content after germination, whereas the vitamin-I' activity only doubled. Mnple pens showed no chnnge in ritnmin-P activity on germination. In these tests the vitanun activity was calculated npproximntely to the weight of the dry ungerminated seeds. The very mnrked increase in the nscorbic acid content of seeds ns they germinate has been known for n long time nnd has heen put more than once to practical use. It m n , however, hardly be creditcd thnt tho increase occurs solely to provide man aith nu ensy procedure for meeting sudden thrents of scurvy, and one is bound to nssume t h n t i t hns sonic physiological signifirnnce for the young plant itself. If thnt is so, the fnet thnt there is little or no simultaneous increase in vitamin-P activity is a t least negative evidence against the suggestioii of Szent-Gyorgyi thnt the nscorbic acid and n " flnvono " type of vitnminP nre linked together in one comtnon entnlytic system for hydrogen trnnsfer. Nor hnve we foun? nny consistent connexiou Letween colour and vitnmin-P activity. Rowan berries nnd black cherries showed, respectively, high.nnd low-vnlues : hlack cherries did not differ from white ; the content of spinach was high, of watercress variable orid maybe negligible : among the roots, parsnip was relatively nntive, while beetroot and carrot showed little, if any, netivity.
Our results, therefore, nfford no evidence for any associ~ition hetwcen substnnees hnving vitnmin-l netivity nnd plnnt. pigments,

## Abstract A recently described apparatus for the determination of traces of sulphur in organic compounds has been investigated. The original method described B vertical tube heated to 830Β° C. and packed with silica, on to which the sample was allowed to fall drop by drop, and burnt in a rapid cur
Hollow-fiber membranes were prepared to remove volatile organic vapors (VOCs) from a nitrogen or air stream. Conditions were found to spin hollow fibers of high performance for the removal of VOCs. The effect of temperature on the permeation of nitrogen gas and acetone vapor was studied. It was foun
## Abstract The negative ion mass spectra of sulphur, dinitriles and their mixtures were studied. The abundance of negative ions of sulphur was almost comparable to that of positive ions. In the negative ion mass spectrum of a mixture of sulphur and dinitrile, intense and characteristic peaks of [M
The action of the increased nir voids in improving the frostresistance is not yet fully understood, but it is believed that they behave in some wny ns n restriction on the iuovenient of moisture within the concrete. Whatever their precise function, it seems clcnr that these materials do give n sligh
