✦ Synopsis

An investigation has been conducted to observe the effect of heat treatment on mercury loss and structural transitions in clinically used amalgams, as well as the individual phases composing dental amalgam. Pure AgZHg, readily loses mercury and transforms to the 61 phase while the remaining amalgams are somewhat more stable. Since essentially no weight loss is observed in clinically used alloys, the mercury, liberated by the yl decomposition, reacts with excess Ag,Sn to form a self-perpetuating reaction, explaining the increases in the 81 and yz phases in the Ag,Sn and "True Dentalloy" amalgams. That is, the mercury has redistributed itself within the amalgam.

Previous studies have shown preferential corrosion of the q'(Cu-Sn) phase in highcopper dental amalgam both in vifro and in vivo, while samples of pure 7' have shown high corrosion resistance. To clarify this contradiction, samples of pure q' crystals mixed with other phases were prepared and tested

Ah&met-A method for accelerating decomposition of sodium amalgam by depolarization of graphite cathodes with deposited and finely divided metallic cobalt in decomposers of mercury cells has been developed, leading to higher concentrations of caustic soda solutions and/or smaller decomposer sizes. Th
