The oxidation processes of copper with a mercury electrode were investigated in the presence of H,O, and in unbuffered NaCl solutions. The method used was anodic stripping alternating current voltammetry. Owing to the electrocatalytic process of Cu and H,O,, the local pH around the electrode increas

✦ Synopsis
Ah&met-A method for accelerating decomposition of sodium amalgam by depolarization of graphite cathodes with deposited and finely divided metallic cobalt in decomposers of mercury cells has been developed, leading to higher concentrations of caustic soda solutions and/or smaller decomposer sizes. The Tafel lines achieved on cobalt&d graphite exhibit nearly the same slopes as the ones on cobalt, but are shifted to more ositive values, thus changing the polarization characteristics of graphite. The design sodium amalgam decomposition towers given by Hine et &* can be applied using t curves on cobaltized graphite obtained by the authors, and is thus extended. Some contributions to water electrolysis and fuel-cell investigations are also given. The present method represents a further extension of the authors'methods for accelerating decomposition of sodium amalgam by depolarization with metallized graphite*. It is of importance in its application to large mercury cells with high currents (greater than 100 KA).
