โœฆ Synopsis

There have been reports of the syntheses of the ortho and para methoxy derivatives of di-t_butylphenyl carbinollV2 and more recently there has been a report of the preparation of the parent compound 13. We report herein the preparation and characterization of i, its rearrangement to the isomeric secondary carbinol, and the implications of the multiplicity of its hydroxyl stretching frequency for conformational isanerism in the compound.

Di-&-butylphenyl carbinol (4) bp. 140-143" (12 am), was originally prepared some time ago4

One of the o-t-butyl groups was eliminated from 2,4,6-tri-t-butyl-N-methylaniline by reaction with phosphorus trichloride in DME to afford sterically crowded N-(2,4-di-t-butylphenyl)-N-methylaminodichlorophosphine, which was utilized for preparation of a novel unsymmetrical diphosphene.
