This article continues the exploration of the usefulness of the techniques of biomechanics to understand the processes of motor development and emerging motor control. In response to commentaries on Jensen (this issue), we reiterate the importance of theory in shaping developmental hypotheses while

β¦ Synopsis
Four questions shape inquiry into the development of movement skills: (1) What is the source of new behaviours in the movement repertoire? (2) What is the definition of competence in the movement? ( 3) What are the mechanisms of change that support and trigger the emergence of new skills? (4) How adaptable is the neuromotor system? The variables of description and mechanisms and the experimental methods of biomechanics provide unique insight to each question. Understanding the interaction between biology and mechanics and this changing dynamic across the lifespan is important to understand human motor development.

## Abstract Motor imagery (MI) mostly activates the same brain regions as movement execution (ME) including the primary motor cortex (Brodmann area 4, BA4). However, whether BA4 is functionally relevant for MI remains controversial. The finding that MI tasks are impaired by BA4 virtual lesions indu
This is a personal account of why the author chose to focus on devising techniques for micromanipulating the blastocyst stage conceptus as a way of investigating early development in mammals. Its aim is to provide insight into what such technical innovations entailed and how they have contributed to
The contribution of the inferior endocardial cushion of the atrioventricular canal to cardiac septation and to the development of the atrioventricular valves was studied in the chick embryo by in vivo labelling techniques. The study was performed in White Leghorn chick embryos in which the dorsal cu
