SuMh4ARY
The special liquid-phase relationships between water, salt and certain liquid polymers permit the extraction of potable water from seawater at an approximate cost of $1 per thousand gallons. The performance ratio is 12.8, using waste heat at 140°F for facilities located on the Eastern Seaboard of the United States; on the Pacific Coast, the temperature of the waste heat need only be 124°F. The status of the technology is such that a pilot plant with a nominal capacity of 0.5 mgd is now in its planning stages. With the completion of the demonstration program, whose duration is estimated at two years, including construction, facilities will be built with nominal capacities in excess of 10 mgd (11,200 acre-feet per year).
