✦ Synopsis

it is shown that the 265 nm pulsed laser photolysb and pulse radiolysis of diiute soIutioos of benzene give rise to two transitory absorption spectra with maxima at 490 nm and 320 mn. The spectrum with km attr 7% = 490 nm is shown to be the excimer state of benzene lglg and the spectrum at X, Y = 320 nrn is uted to a biradical of benzene. It is shown that the biradicd is formed by reaccioa o the ground '4 state and triplet states of benzene giving rise to short lifetimes of the LripIet state at high benzene concentration. The rate constant for this process is 1.8~10~ set -1 and ttte quantum yield for intersystem crossing, r$T for the benzene 1Bh state is 0.39.
