The yields of more than fifteen fission products have been carefully measured using radiochemical techniques, for 235 U(n,f), 239 Pu(n,f) in a thermal spectrum, for 233 U(n,f), 235 U(n,f), and 239 Pu(n,f) reactions in a fission neutron spectrum, and for 233 U(n,f), 235 U(n,f), 238 U(n,f), and 239 Pu

The neutron-intensity fluctuations of the original Los Alamos Water Boiler (LOPO) were used to measure the dispersion in Y, the number of neutrons per fission. The result obtained was 5 = 7.8 f 0.6 for U-235 thermal fission.
