The sulfonamide potentiator ormetoprim (6) has been prepared with a carbon-14 label for use in biolo ical studies.

The key intermediate, 2-methylveratraldehyde (4, was prepared by 14CO2 carbonation of the Grignard reagent from 2-bromo-4,5dimethoxytaluene (1) followed by esterification, reduction and manganese dioxide oxidation.

Nitration of N-ethoxy~arbonyl-[U-~~C]aniline with two equivalents of nitric acid in sulfuric acid afforded N-ethoxycarbonyl-2,4-dinitro-[U-l4C]aniline which was deprotected quantitatively to P,Cdinitro-[U-l4C]aniline. Selective hydrogenation provided 99.5% radiochemically pure [U-I 4C]nitrophenylene
