## Abstract The title reaction was effected by oxidation with copper(II) compounds, halogenating agents, quinones, and air or oxygen, in the last case preferably with the addition of a promoter. These procedures are all conducted in basic medium, and require a correct choice of reaction solvent.

β¦ Synopsis
Abstract
A parametric study of the ShippβKaplan procedure shows promise for the use of reduced amounts of cheaper mixed solvent systems, the use of lower quantities of more concentrated hypochlorite, and elimination of the aging period. Use of methanol as the sole reaction solvent at 50Β°C shows promise; methanol with a hydrophobic cosolvent gave crude HNBB of high purity. Only a slight improvement in yield was obtained; under no conditions did it exceed 82%.
