✦ Synopsis

The authors review the evidence leading to the formulation of the carbon reduction cycle and discuss its quantitative importance. Their objective is to map complete synthetic sequences from carbon dioxide to final products. To do this, they describe biosynthetic pathways which they believe exist in the chloroplast, and they show how newly reduced carbon from the carbon reduction cycle provides the starting material for these pathways. This is a stimulating book on a subject which, though in its infancy, is of vast importance.

The reader is taken step-by-step through various simplified approaches that give much qualitative understanding, and into more complex calculations which are intended to yield quantitatively accurate results, but which, so far, seldom do. In contrast to many recent theoretical books on solid state
