✦ Synopsis

The reader is taken step-by-step through various simplified approaches that give much qualitative understanding, and into more complex calculations which are intended to yield quantitatively accurate results, but which, so far, seldom do.

In contrast to many recent theoretical books on solid state physics, the mathematics used is at a level such that the arguments presented can easily be followed by a well-read but not particularly mathematical physicist. The background required of the reader is little more than basic quantum mechanics and elementary solid state physics. The writing is clear and understandable, and a number of useful figures and tables are included. The author also includes details of some computational procedures and tables of numerical results which should be of considerable assistance to anyone entering the field.

The book is reasonably well produced and is not over-priced. The author frankly presents the case for his particular approach, and there is little doubt that the case is sometimes overstated. However, Harrison has produced a book which cannot help but add to the understanding of any reasonably well-prepared physicist.
