The threshold photoelectron spectrum of molecular iodine has been measured at a resolution of 6-8 meV using synchrotron radiation in the region 9-14 eV and a penetrating-field electron spectrometer. The spectrum reveals resolved vibrational structure in each spin-orbit component of the X ('&) state

โฆ Synopsis
Cl 3p and Ni 3d ionization energies are computed at the complete-active-space self-consistent-field level. The calculations yield 224 ion states within 25 eV of the neutral ground state. Of these, only about 11 are predicted to contribute sizably to the photoelectron spectra. The calculations show that the low-lying states of the ion correspond to ligand holes, not 3d holes as previously assigned. This conclusion is discussed in relation to the intensity differences between the He(I) and He(H) spectra.

The 351 nm photoelectron spectrum of PbO-has been recorded with 9 meV resolution. Transitions from the \*II,,2 PbOground state anion to the X 'Z+ neutral ground state and three excited states (a I, b O-, and A O+ ) are observed. The adiabatic electron affinity of PbO is determined to be 0.722(6) eV.
