β¦ Synopsis
The photochemical reaction of cerium(IV) ammonium nitrate (CAN) in acetonitrile with cyclohexene, I-octene and a series of styrene derivatives leads to the formation of 1,2--dlnitrate adducts in high yields. The reaction takes place by the intermediacy of the nitrate radical which forms in the photolysis of CAN. The reaction rate of N03* with the olefinic substrates has been determined by the laser flash photolysis technioue. High values of reactivity are observed, the second order rate constants ranging from 5x108 to 9x109 M-Is-I. The plot of the rate data for substituted styrenes against G+ value of -0.97.

Absolute rate constants for the addition of the 2-hydroxy-2-propyl radical to 18 substituted alkenes (CH2 = C X Y ) were determined at (296 -+ 1) Kin 2-propanol by time-resolved electronspin-resonance spectroscopy. With alkene substitution the rate constants vary by more than 6 orders of magnitude.
Absolute rate constants for the addition of the 2-cyano-2-propyl radical to 26 alkenes CH2 = CXY at 315 K were determined in solution by time-resolved electron-spin-resonance spectroscopy. They vary with the alkene substituents from 30 M-' s-l to 7'010 M-' s-'. For styrene the temperature dependence
Terpenes and terpene alcohols are prevalent compounds found in a wide variety of consumer products including soaps, flavorings, perfumes, and air fresheners used in the indoor environment. Knowing the reaction rate of these chemicals with the nitrate radical is an important factor in determining the
