✦ Synopsis

Open-circuit potential, potentiostatlc and voltammetric measurements of the O,, O,/SO, and O&O, electrodes have been made in molten Li,SO,-K,SO, eutectic at 625°C. in the absence of SO2 the overall reaction of the 0, electrode is the reduction of 0, to O*-through the formation of 0: -ions. In the presence of SO, the overall reaction LS the reduction of SO, and 0, to SO:-, probably through the formation of SO:-. The overall reaction of the 02/C02 electrode is similar to that of the same electrode in molten carbonates. ie the reduction of CO, and 0, to CO: -. The transfer coefficients and exchange currents have been estimated for these reactions & platinum ani gold. 34x 0. E. ABDEL-SALAMANDM. Hocking[lO] suggested that the potential-determining process of these electrodes in molten Na,SO, at 900°C could be as folIows: so,+e-= so2++o:-.

A study has been made of the Oz/S02 electrode in moIten equimolar LisCO,-Na2C0, at 600°C. The overall electrode reaction, reaction order with respect to PsO, and exchange currents have been determined from opencircuit potential, potentiostatic and voltammetrtc measurements.
