Sulphate was rapidly bound by cell suspensions of Thiobacillus ferrooxidans. The binding was depressed by tetrathionate but was unaffected by Group VI anions, cysteine or methionine. Xanthate floatation compounds, added to cultures of Thiobacillus ferrooxidans leaching chalcopyrite, inhibited growth in the concentration range l-10 mM and caused a drop in formation of soluble copper and iron. Maximum (8090%) growth inhibition was at 10 mM for isobutyl-, amyl-and ethyl xanthate wh
