## Abstract Preliminary measurements of the temperature distribution in the topmost three metres of the open ocean have been made from an Ocean Weather Ship. The two profiles recorded are discussed in relation to the important problem of heat transfer near the sea surface.

The authors summarize their recent published studies on profile measurements including new universal functions and an error analysis with a particular view to parameterisation above soil and water. Verification of the theoretical results is given using new data of the MESP-81 Tsimlyansk experiment.
