The electron affinity trends observed for the title compounds indicate that in 1.4-cyclohexadiene the A, anion state, arismg from electron capture into the out-of-phase combination of the empty ethenic v\* MOs, lies at lower energy than the B,, anion state, correlated with the in-phase combination.
Electron transmission spectroscopy is employed to locate sharp variations in the total cross sections for electrons scattered from several cyclic compounds containing two carbon-carbon double bonds. For each molecule, structure is observed which we associate with the temporary occupation of the two
