✦ Synopsis
The presence of branches in poly(viny1 chloride) as indicated by previous IR measurements on the polymer reduced to polyethylene by means of lithium aluminum hydridc is believed to affect materially the morphology and solid state properties of poly(viny1 chloride); however, up to the present, the nature of these branchcs has not been known. By usc of I3C-NMR on reduced poly(viny1 chloride) it is demonstrated that the branches are methyl groups, prcsumably corresponding to chloromcthyl groups in the original polymer. In the sample studied. the frequency is ca. 3 methyl groups pcr lo00 CH2 groups. but this is -expected to depend on the temperature of polymcrization. Thcre is also some evidence for long branches, probably not cxceeding 1 per loo0 C H 2 groups.

## Abstract It is a common view that poly(vinyl acetate) has many branches at the acetyl side group, but that the corresponding poly(vinyl alcohol) has little branching. In order to study the branching in poly(vinyl acetate) and poly(vinyl alcohol) which is formed by chain transfer to polymer, the
