Small quantities of tritiated methane were prepared by fermenting [methyl-3Hl methylamine hydrochloride using exponential phase, transiently starved, co-cultures of methanogenic bacteria. This method gave the expected 75% yield of C3H4 from the substrate and produced H2-free, low 3H20 background C3H
