The magnetic susceptibility anisotropy of benzene, 1,3,5trifluorobenzene and hexafluorobenzene is obtained from measurements of the Cotton--Mouton effect on the gases. Substitution of fluorine for hydrogan results in a decrease in the magnetic susceptibility anisotropy.
