✦ Synopsis
Triphenylboron BPh3 and the triphenylcarbenium salts C%'h3/SbCl, and C%3/BF~ have been investkated by ODMR and emission spectroscopic methods. The zero-field splitting_tZFS) parameters D and E and the decay rate constants of the triplet zero-field levels (ZFL) as well as the phosphorescence spectra were mencured. The non-zero E values indicate a symmetry lower than Da for the Jahn-Teller unstable triplet state of all compounds. The radiative decay of T1 shows a strong deloc.dization of the triplet wavefunction for C?h 3. but a strong localization on the benzene rings for BPh3. This is in ageement with Xl0 calculations.
