✦ Synopsis

A new layered compound, (\mathrm{Tl}{2} \mathrm{NbO}{2} \mathrm{PO}{4}), has been isolated. It crystallizes in the rhombohedral system, space group (R \overline{3}). The cell parameters are (a=8.746(2) \AA \mathcal{A}, c=44.753(7) \AA, Z=18). Its structure has been determined from 990 independent reflections, with (I \geq 3 \sigma(I)). collected on a CAD4 automated diflractometcr. The final (R) index and weighted (R{\text {fi }}) index are 0.034 and 0.032 , respectively. This structure is built up from layers of (\mathrm{NbO}{6}) octahedra and (\mathrm{PO}{4}) tetrahedra sharing corners. The Tl ions are located in the interthyer spaces. O 1493 Academic Press. Inc.
