The regulation would reduce the phosphorus content to 0.5% of the overall weight of all laundry detergent products sold in the EU. The proposed ban does not cover automatic dishwasher detergents and the use of detergents by cleaning professionals, as technically and economically feasible alternatives are not yet available across the EU. The commission will re-evaluate whether to implement a similar ban on automatic dishwasher detergents by 31 Dec 2014.
