The reactions of substituted phenols with polyvinyl acetate radicals have been investigated. The stoichiometric coe~cient of the reaction is independent of the substituents. Electron-repelling substituents in the phenols increase the rate of reaction. The reactivities of the investigated compounds s

✦ Synopsis
A study was made of the radical reactivities of substituted nitrobenzenes where, in addition to the inductive effect, a mesomeric effect is exerted by the substituent on the reactivity of the nitro group. Investigation of the relative intensity of the mesometic effect showed that the mesomeric effect of the substituent is approximately four times as high for the para position as for the meta position. The mesomeric constants (aa) of the substituents studied have been calculated as well as the p constant, characteristic of reactions between the poly(vinyl acetate) radical and substituted nitrobenzenes. Additional data are in good agreement with the values (pt = Pa = p) obtained during investigations with substituents showing exclusively an inductive effect.

A study was made on the inhibition by some 3,3'-and 4,4'-disubstituted azobenzenes of the polymerization of vinylacetate initiated by azoisobutyronitrile at 50 °. The inhibitory effects of these substances can be attributed to their ability to engage in radical addition giving a less reactive hydraz

Polymerization of 2-methacryloyloxyethyl phosphorylcholine (MPC) was kinetically investigated in ethanol using dimethyl 2,2Ј-azobisisobutyrate (MAIB) as initiator. The overall activation energy of the homogeneous polymerization was calculated to be 71 kJ/mol. The polymerization rate (R p ) was expre
