โฆ Synopsis
A new technique has been developed for investigations into the kinetics of dissolution of solids in liquids at ambient and elevated temperatures. at present up to 1100ยฐC. The method of passing the liquid, under conditions of fully developed streamline Row, through a straight tube of circular cross-section can be analysed quantitatively and can take account of the variation of diffusion coefficient and viscosity with solute concentration. If sufficient ancillary data are available this allows the diffusion coefficient of the dissolved product to be calculated. An empirical calibration of the apparatus with standard solutions enables the viscosity of the flowing melt to be estimated. The dissolution of silica in molten vanadium pentoxide was investigated. For this complex system binary diffusion coefficients in the range estimated by other workers were obtained and approximate calculations indicated that the rate controlling diffusing species is probably the atomic silicon ion.
