โœฆ Synopsis

The retention of manganese in the water of the Wahnbach reservoir was determined in mass balance calculations. The retention properties for manganese drastically decreased after the phosphorus elimination plant was taken into service. Processes controlling the distribution and mobility of manganese in the reservoir were based on the results of tests conducted to evaluate the role of the microorganism Metullogeniurn personuturn. A substantial retention of manganese in the Wahnbach reservoir was found to be dependent on the presence of this planktonic manganese-oxidizing bacterium. The test results clearly indicate the importance of Metullogenium spec. as catalyst in the removal and oxidation of dissolved Mn(I1).

The permanganate oxidation of alkencs is generally believed to occur via an intermediate cyclic hypomanganate ester both in alkaline [ 1, 21 and acidic media [3-51. Two types of intermediates have been detected in these reactions, viz. manganese(II1) [4-
