โœฆ Synopsis

Abstract

Previous reports of โ€œinsulin shockโ€ induced in fish (and frogs) by externally applied insulin have been confirmed. The insulin induced coma can be reversed by either external glucose, sucrose, or epinephrine. Experiments on rainbow trout have shown that the externally applied insulin acts as though it enters the fish in that a typical hypoglycemia is caused. The action of insulin is via the gills and does not require participation of the digestive tract.

The present study showed that insulin (0.01 pg/ml, = 2 nM) inhibited [3H]-thymidine incorporation in support cells, most likely Schwann cells, of the cultured frog sciatic nerve. A 25-35% inhibition took place in regenerating nerve preparations as well as in preparations devoid of neuronal protein s

Insulin has both short- and long-term effects on cellular metabolism. The short-term effects are known to involve the insulin receptor, a protein kinase capable of phosphorylating itself and other proteins. The role of the receptor was elucidated by studies of a mutant insulin receptor which lacked

Light microscopy studies on the ยฎsh cracker gel and expanded product (`keropok') emphasised the role of ยฎsh proteins in the starch expansion process. The addition of salt (20 g kg ร€1 ) in the `keropok' helped to distribute evenly the starch in the ยฎsh protein. Formation of thin ยฎsh muscle bundles as
