✦ Synopsis

Lewontin and Krakauer's test (Genetics 74: 17% 195,1973) of the spatial heterogeneity of F values has been applied to the data from four natural populations of Drosophita subobscura. It was found that genes behaving as selected were the ones that are found in linkage disequilibria with inversions within which they are located. What was really tested was then the behavior of these inversions. It seems desirable when this test is applied to have an assurance that the genes tested are not in linkage disequilibria with inversions.

A number of experimental populations of Drosophila melanogaster either monochromosomal (e.g. isogenic) or polychromosomal (e.g. random heterozygous) with respect to their second chromosome were obtained by use of the L Cy/Pm marker strain. All populations were initially lethal free. Every other gene
