✦ Synopsis
The products of the reaction between 450 ° and 515°C have been found to include water, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide and small quantities o I benzene, formaldehyde, benzaldehyde, benzyl alcohol, benzoic acid, phenol, quinones, hydrogen peroxide and organic peroxy compounds as well as hydrogen, methane and ethylene. From a detailed study of the variation of the formaldehyde concentration, it has been confirmed that this is the intermedmte mainly responsible for degenerate branching. The maximum formaldehyde concentration is proportional to fuel and oxygen pressures under the conditions studied. A mechanism is proposed which accounts ]or the principal experimental findings.
