โฆ Synopsis
A gas chromatographic
technique has been developed for the determination of the impurities in caprolactam, using Carbowax 2oM. as the partition liquid and Chromosorb I? as the support, treated or untreated with potassium hydroxide. The system was used on a semipreparative scale for tile separation of the, two main impurities of e-caprolactam, viz. 6-methyl-z-piperidone and octahydrophenazine, after enrichment by continuous crystallization.
To confirm their identity, the two impurities were synthesized and injected into the gas chromatograpll.
Other impurities were identitied by comparison of their retention times with those of known compounds.
A technique was also developed to determine the degree of oxidation of caprolactam by gas chromatography.
