We discuss the impact of recent developments in nanotechnology on the future of silicon microelectronics. Although the transition from micro-to nanoelectronics now seems unavoidable, it is still possible to envisage several alternative scenarios along which this could happen. Some of them are reviewed and an attempt is made to evaluate the likeliness of their occurrence over the next fifteen years.
