β¦ Synopsis
Abstrad-The threshold pressure of free Cl* in the formation of CdCl,-graphite was measured as a function of the activity of the halide. The intercalation was carried out in the equilibrium of the melt and the gaseous phase. Different vapor pressures were produced by the addition of KC1 to the melt. The beginning of the intercalation was indicated by X-ray diffraction. For the threshold pressure of Cl,, the following law of mass action is valid: pat,* . pg = 0.71 (pressures in mbar) Hence the free Cl, takes part in the nucleation reaction. The composition of the nuclei is about C.CdCIZ,,.
