The continuum variational method of Kohn has been developed into a practical computational method in electronatom scattering theory. This algebraic or matrix variational formalism is reviewed, with emphasis on the computational procedures necessary for applications to inelastic scattering processes.
A method is proposed for reducing the complexity of scattering calculations carried out using the Kohn variational principle. The technique is based upon the use of a pointwise representation for the L2 part of the basis set and eliminates the need to explicitly evaluate any integrals involving such
## Abstract This paper provides a new step towards a mathematical foundation for Sβmatrices. It introduces a new operation, the Sβmatrix multiplication, and defines the mathematical group of Sβmatrices, allowing the power of Group Theory to be applied to Sβparameter network analysis. We present a new method of analyzing the polarization dependence of nonlinear light scattering (2 in, 1 out), which generalizes the 4x4 Mueller matrix used in linear scattering. We apply it to the case of an isotropic ensemble of anisotropic scatterers, obtaining a "super-Mueller matrix" of dimensio
