Abstract

Predictions of the β€œredox” and β€œcomplex” schemes for the Fe^3+^ catalyzed decomposition of H~2~O~2~ have been compared with published and new experimental data by numerical integratior of the appropriate complete sets of differential equations. Apparent discrepancies for the redox scheme at high Fe^3+^/H~2~O~2~ ratios are shown to disappear in the complete treatment, and inconsistencies of the complex scheme with both kinetic data and spectroscopic measurements are pointed out.

The stoichiometry of O2 evolution in the Fe3+ catalyzed decomposition of H202 in dilute HCIOa a t high [FeS+]/[H202] ratios is 2H202 -+ 2H20 + O2 with no deficiency indicating accumulation of an intermediate complex. This and the observed kinetics are shown to be consistent with a "redox chain" but

## Abstract Iron complexes (tpa)Fe(OTf)~2~ (1) and (bpmen)Fe(OTf)~2~ (2) [tpa=tris‐(2‐pyridylmethyl)amine; bpmen=__N,Nβ€²__‐bis‐(2‐pyridylmethyl)‐__N,N′‐__dimethyl‐1,2‐ethylenediamine] were found to catalyze the __in situ__ formation of AcOOH from H~2~O~2~ and AcOH in the course of olefin oxidations.
