✦ Synopsis

The interaction of the s electron system of furyl and thienyl substituents with the silicon (or germanium) atom is less significant in fragmentation under fast atom bombardment than under electron impact. Under fast atom bombardment the primary fragmentation of the title compounds is determined by steric influence of the heteroaromatic substituents.

## Abstract Positive‐ion fast atom bombardment (FAB) and __B/E__ linked scan FAB mass spectra of seven carotenoids are reported. In all cases the M ^+·^ ions are observed, and the [M + H]^+^ ions are absent in the hydrocarbons and weak in the oxygenated compounds. The usefulness of __B/E__ linked s
