The electron impact (El) mass spectra of alkyltriphenylphosphonium and alkyltriphenylarsonium salts were compared with fast atom bombardment (FAB) mass spectra in a 3-nitrobenzyl alcohol matrix. It is clearly demonstrated that FAB is an effective ionization method compared with El for analysis of th

✦ Synopsis
The interaction of the s electron system of furyl and thienyl substituents with the silicon (or germanium) atom is less significant in fragmentation under fast atom bombardment than under electron impact. Under fast atom bombardment the primary fragmentation of the title compounds is determined by steric influence of the heteroaromatic substituents.
