The energy stored in chips formed by drilling at room temperature and at -195Β°C has been determined for five gold-silver alloys in the composition range from 35 to 98 atomic per cent Au. The stored energy varies with composition by a factor of nearly 5 at room temperature and by nearly 3 at -195Β°C.

β¦ Synopsis
Strips of an alloy of 75 wt. per cent gold and 25 wt. per cent silver were cold worked by rolliitg.
The stored energy was released by dissolution of the samples in liquid tin and found calorimetrically by comparison with annealed samples. The total energy expended in rolling was determined from a stress-strain diagram applicable to the rolling process.
The stored energy increases with the strain, but shows a tendency toward saturation at high strains. The ratio of the stored energy to the total energy expended decreases at high strains.

Calorimetric and X-ray diffraction line-broadening measurements were carried out on samples of a 75Au-25Ag (weight per cent) alloy deformed by filing and annealed at various temperatures up to 500Β°C. Stored energy, hardness, subgrain size, local strain, and short-range order determinations were made
One set of wires of an 82.6 Au-17.4 Ag (wt.%) alloy was drawn at -195Β°C to a true strain of 0.62. A second set, after drawing at -195Β°C to a strain of 0.62, was annealed at room temperature. Two further sets were drawn at -195Β°C to a strain of 0.62, brought to room temperature and drawn to total st
