Abstract

Some measurements from aircraft of the emissivity of the earth's surface are described. They show that for the type of surface studied, the earth's surface is radiating as a black‐body at a temperature somewhere between screen air temperature and grass or sea‐surface temperature.

Measurements of the snow surface emissivity for infrared radiation have been made with an infrared radiation thermometer. The mean value of the emissivity is estimated at E = 0.970 + 0.008.
