✦ Synopsis

A framework for the interpretation of the visihle/UV absorption spectra of high-nuclearity transition-metal cluster carbonyls based on MO studies of their electronic structure is proposed. The main characteristic of these cluster compounds is the high density of excited electronic states within a few eV of the ground state. This implies that absorption bands must be interpreted as the envelopes of many electronic transitions of similar energies. The "platinum dicarbonyl" oligomers rue used as illustrative examples.
