The efficacy of a hypoglycaemic plant extract, in common use by Kuwaiti diabetic individuals, was evaluated using both streptozotocin-induced diabetic and normal rats. A significant decrease in blood glucose concentration was demonstrated on glucose tolerance tests, as compared to untreated animals.

Alcoholic and water extracts from seed-coats of Viciafaba var. equina were prepared and their effects on in-vivo intestinal sugar absorption across the rat small intestine were investigated. Both extracts significantly (P<O.OOl) inhibited sugar absorption. The higher and more stable inhibition was i
