Wall linings are often used in dwellings to improve the thermal insulation of external walls and also to provide a dry finish. These linings are usually made from plasterboard, and some types are composites, having a thermal insulating material such as foamed plastic or mineral fibre bonded to the plasterboard.
Wall linings can affect sound insulation, and experiments have been conducted to compare the effect of different types of lining and different fixing methods. The main conclusions are that composite linings should be mounted on spacers, rather than flat against the wall, and that plasterboard/mineral fibre types can provide a reasonably simple way of improving sound insulation.
