✦ Synopsis

In order to elucidate the mechanism determining the mass transfer at a gas evolving electrode, the thickness S of the Nernst diffusion layer was determined as a function of the current density for both hydrogen and oxygen evolving on horizontal and vertical electrodes in acid as well as in alkaline solutions.

The thickness 6 of the Nemst diffusion layer depends on the nature of the gas evolved, on the mode of formation of bubbles, on cd j and on the height of the electrode. The effect on evaporation rates of air content in flashing water was investigated experimentally in a scaled-down open-channel flash evaporator.
