β¦ Synopsis
Secondary product accumulation by suspension cultures of Glycyrrhiza glabra has been studied. The cultures did not accumulate either glycyrrhizin of glycyrrhetic acid but did produce the isoflavonoid formononetin. The effect of initial pH, sucrose concentrations, medium composition, auxin and cytokinins on formononetin accumulation was studied. Initially formononetin accumulation was nongrowth related but this changed to growth associated when the medium was modified.

Podophyllotoxin was produced by cell cultures derived from needles of Callitris drummondii. The needles of this conifer contained 1.56% podophyllotoxin on a dry weight basis, 32% being present in the Ξ²-glucosidic form. Trace amounts of desoxypodophyllotoxin and matairesinol were also detected. In da
