The hydration characteristics of phosphatidylcholines and the effect of cholesterol on these were studied with differential thermal analysis and water vapour adsorption experiments. Also the water adsorption of egg phosphatidylethanolamine and the effect of cholesterol on this was studied and compar

β¦ Synopsis
Of the polar lipids studied (phospholipida and glycoiipids), only phosphatidylchohne and sphingomyelin can disperse in water with up to 2 mol cholesteroI/mol polar lipid. However, mixtures of phosphatidylethanolaminamine with small amounts of phosphatidylcholine and mixed lipids from mitochondria and myclin will also form sterol-rich disperdons. Steroids in which the 3@-OH group is replacred by an 0x0 function do not form such steroid-rich dispersions. Electron microscopy and optical rotatory diqeraion (ORD) show that sterols disperse with cerebrosides and gangliosidas to form cylindrical structures with the regions around C atoms 3 and 7 of the rtarol in leua polar anvirornnents than those they occupy in phospholipid lipoaomes.
It is proposed that choline-containing phosphohpids facilitate entry of &ml molecules into the outer leaflet of cell surface membranes but that the phospholipid composition itself will not give rise to an asymmetric diatributic;n of sterol in membranes with a high cholesterol content. ## Abstract Cholesterol and phospholipids are major components of biological membranes. The role of cholesterol in membranes is not metabolic and is known to be a regulator of membrane fluidity which in turn regulates various biological phenomena. We have studied the nature of cholesterol and phosp
As reported earlier, the marine sponge phospholipids 1,2-di-5,9-hexacosadienoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine (PC (26 : 2, 26 : 2)) and its phosphoethanolamine counterpart exclude cholesterol to a great extent from their liposomal bilayers. To understand the reason for this exclusion, shorter acyl cha
The photoinduced interaction of thionine dye with phosphatidylcholine (PC) (and its components, e.g. lysoPC, phosphorylcholine and choline) and oxidized cholesterol was studied in artificial membranes using spectrophotometric and photoelectrochemical methods. The results show that the dye (electron
