. The direct effect of shelter on evaporation rates: theory and an experimental test. Agric. Meteorol., 29: 125--136.
Previous work on the reduction of evaporation by shelter has shown that evaporation is most strongly reduced during periods of strong sensible-heat advection. In this paper it is argued, from theoretical considerations, that an exchange flux, defined by X = s(R n G)/ (s + ~/) XE, should be used as the measure of the effect of advection. The experiment of Miller is re-analysed in terms of this exchange flux, In Miller's experiment evaporation rates from soybeans were measured directly using lysimeters, and secondary changes in plant growth and stomatal resistances were minimised. It is found that the exchange flux from Miller's lysimeter, located near the centre of a semi-circular windbreak, was reduced 1o about half of its value in the open on most occasions.
