✦ Synopsis

Recently Maret et al.' presented the results of experiments on the birefringence of DNA oriented by means of a strong magnetic field. These measurements can be theoretically related to stiffness parameters of the chain in a way closely related to the calculation of the dichroism or polarizability of a chain relative to its end-to-end vector. In a previous paper,2 the calculation of the dichroism of DNA-like helices was outlined using two rather simple models for the bending of the helix. This communication shall draw on these calculations in deriving an expression for the linear dichroism or optical polarizability of a flexible helix in a magnetic field. Although the final results given here apply only to the isotropic model for bending, the method of calculation for other models will be indicated.

Consider a diamagnetic molecule in a magnetic field with the laboratory axis, 3, being in the direction of the applied field. The energy of a molecule in a given configuration in this field is given by

## Abstract While the magnetic energy in a plasma can be easily bounded by classical energy inequalities, the behaviour of the maximum of the magnetic field is less clear. In fact, the field in chaotic flows appears to concentrate in progressively smaller regions of the domain, so that conceivably
