✦ Synopsis

We would like to report the detection of hydrogen cyanide as an impurity in N,N-dimethylformamide (l&G). This information will be of unusual significance to those working with this solvent where the presence of cyanide, if not recognized, might lead to strange behavior of reactants.

Recently, an anomaly such as this was encountered in this laboratory. 1,2 It was discovered that bensil reacts with certain nucleophiles (phenoxide, t-butoxide, and hydroxide) in CMF to form benzoin benzoate (9 and the corresponding benzoylated nucleophile (eq. 1).

Hydrollen cyanide has been observed as β€’ product from the photolysis of the CH2CO--N 2 and CH2N2-N 2 systems. The rate constant for the re.tction of CHa(XIB l) with N a has been detegmmed to be Β’10 -16 cm 3 molecule -1 s -1 . A time history of the HCN production has been obtained and s hypothesis ad
