โฆ Synopsis
Single crystals of a third modification of (\mathrm{Mn}{3} \mathrm{As}{2}) were obtained by chemical transport from 780 to (730^{\circ} \mathrm{C}) of prereacted samples in sealed silica tubes in the presence of iodine. This compound is the major reaction product when the elemental components are annealed in the appropriate ratio at (650^{\circ} \mathrm{C}). The structure was determined from single-crystal diffractometer data: (C 2 / m, a=) (1324.7(3) \mathrm{pm}, b=369.5(1) \mathrm{pm}, c=904.6(4) \mathrm{pm}, \beta=132.23(3)^{\circ}), (Z=4, R=0.024) for 34 variables and 553 structure factors. It is closely related to the structures of (\mathrm{V}{3} \mathrm{As}{2}) and (\mathrm{Ti}{5} \mathrm{Te}{4}). The similarities and the differences in the near-neighbor coordinations of the three (\mathrm{Mn}{3} \mathrm{As}{2}) modifications are discussed. (1994 Academic Press, Inc.
