✦ Synopsis

The infrared spectrum of phenylmethylidynephosphine PhC=P has been measured in the gaseous and solid phases. The C=P stretching vibration has been assigned to the band at I569 cm-', which is comparable to the bands at 1520-l 559 cm-' observed for alkylidynephosphines with the C-C-P group. The conjugation of the C-P triple bond with the phenyl ring has been demonstrated.
